In a joint operation between Hi-Tech Nelspruit and Mbombela’s by-law enforcement on Tuesday, three suspects were arrested for the possession of drugs.
According to Hi-Tech operations manager Callum MacPherson, one suspect was arrested at West End shopping centre, another caught behind the bushes in Riverside Industrial while the third suspect was caught at the park on Ehmke Street.
MacPherson said that only a moderate amount of dagga was found.
“We do not work with drug busts very often, but we are excited when we get the opportunity to also help the community in this way,” MacPherson said.
According to Sgt Loewie Laubscher, only two cases were opened.
Bongani Sibiya pleaded guilty and received a R300 fine, while Elvis Mkhatswa is scheduled to appear in court on August 14. Laubscher said the reason the fine is so low was due to the fact that marijuana is only worth R3 per gram in South Africa.
