A 36-year-old man, who raped his nine-year-old stepdaughter while her mother was in hospital, has been sentenced to 23 years’ in prison.

In December 2014 the victim was staying with Mabuza in KaNyamazane when the victim’s mother was hospitalised. Mabuza sent her to the shop. When she returned he pushed her into his bedroom and raped her.

The victim testified to two other incidents where the accused raped her and threatened to kill her if she reported it to anyone. After her mother was discharged from the hospital on October 2015, the victim and her mother went to stay with relatives and she reported the incident to her grandmother.

Mabuza was arrested and remanded in custody.

Mabuza pleaded not guilty to the offence. Regional prosecutor, Thulani Msibi argued for a lengthy time of imprisonment, as the accused was in a position of trust in regards to the victim and should have protected her, not preyed on her as an easy target.

The accused has been in custody since October 13, 2015.

“The NPA welcomes the sentence, and will continue to stem the tide of criminality by imposing harsh sentences to those who commit similar crimes,” Nyuswa said.
