Lowveld High learners reach for the stars

Cultural activities

The senior choir performed for the premier at the Mpumalanga Show. It was also invited to the St Peter’s College Sports and Cultural Festival in Johannesburg, and participated in African Explosion.

  • Lowveld High learners attained second place in the provincial SAASTE debating competition.
  • Learners did exceptionally at this year’s eisteddfod. Blessing Mabusela was even invited to dance at the gala evening.
  • Three participants from this school won gold at the provincial art competition.

Sports

The sevens rugby team was ranked fourth in the province behind Middelburg Hoërskool, Hoëskool Nelspruit and HTS Middelburg

The first girls cricket team won the Enhlanzeni A league and their match against Lydenburg. They were scheduled to compete in the provincial final in Witbank against HTS Witbank but this was cancelled due to rain.The number-one position in Mpumalanga will be shared with HTS Witbank. Four of the girls were chosen to play for the u/19 Mpumalanga Titans team.

Athletics

These Lowveld High athletes feature in the South Africa Top 10 and have been encouraged by Mpumalanga Athletics to train for the 2020 Olympics:

The 15-year-old Nolwazi Mashaba is a double South African champion. She achieved third place in triple jump at SA Schools and Juniors. She achieved the school’s most versatile sports woman and sports woman of the year award.

Norbert Ponisammy achieved second place at SA Juniors in the u/20 long jump. He came third at SA Schools in the u/19 long jump 100 metres.

Frank Muwayi was placed third at SA Juniors and second at SA Schools for triple jump, and was awarded sportsman of the year at the school.

Gugu Nkambule came fifth at the SA Schools meet and fourth at SA Juniors in the u/15 and u/20 long jump.

Sub-Youth Athletics

A total of 12 learners from Lowveld High attended the Sub-Youth Athletics and a number of them did very well in the events:

  • Lerato Mohala: third in discus
  • Sindiswa Nkosi: second in shot put
  • Sipho Mashele: third in javelin
  • Blessing Mabunda: second in 200-metre sprint and first in 100 metres
  • Tato Sifunda: first in high jump
  • Banele Muwayi: third in 100-metre hurdles, second in triple jump and second in long jump
  • Mikenzo Khoza: third in triple jump
  • Asiphe Keis: second in 200 metres
  • Siphesihle Mashele: first in 400 metres.

Five learners will also be progressing to the Sub-Youth Interprovincial Championships which will be held at Pilditch Stadium on November 18:

  • Nolwazi Mashaba for triple jump and long jump
  • Banele Muwayi for long jump and triple jump
  • Natasha Malatjie for long jump
  • Blessing Mabunda for 100 and 200 metres
  • Tato Sifunda for high jump.

Academics

A total of 27 of the top matriculants were invited to a camp hosted by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. Lowveld High achieved first, second and third place in the exam at the camp.

Grade 11 learner Mohammed Hira was awarded a silver medal and progressed to the interview phase of the International Science Fair which took place during the October vacation in Boksburg. If he passes the interview phase then he will travel to Los Angeles to showcase his work on an energy-saving street lighting system. He also achieved a silver medal at the Regional Science Expo.

Grade 11 learners, Lebogaung Maunatlala and Vezo Mazibuko achieved bronze at the Regional Science Expo. Their project was presented at the International Science Fair by Lebogaung and it achieved bronze.
