A local from Mbombela, Lungile Ndlovu who matriculated from Khutsalani Senior Secondary School in Kabokweni in 2014 has been reaping the rewards for taking a chance and working hard.

“I already have a job secured for next year and I hope to gain lots of experience there,” says Ndlovu, a Shoprite bursary holder now in the third and final year of her National Diploma in Retail Management at the University of Johannesburg.

“In grade 12 I was searching for bursaries online and read about Shoprite’s offering. I immediately went to Checkers Riverside Mall. The staff there gave me all the information I needed and helped me through the online application process,” explains Ndlovu.

The bursary programme is linked to a work-back agreement, giving students the boost they need to kick-start their careers. Looking to be close to her mother and hometown, she has chosen to take a job in either the Checkers at Riverside Mall, or in Hazyview depending on availability.

Ndlovu says that she would encourage anyone, but especially young women to apply for bursaries of this kind so as to take charge of their lives and stand up to the challenges they face.

Already looking to extend her qualifications, Ndlovu has already applied to study an advanced diploma in business administration at Unisa which she hopes to complete while working full-time.

With over 50 per cent of unemployed South Africans falling between the ages of 15 – 34 and a shortage of funding for many students in need, the Shoprite Group is searching for bright, hard-working young people like Ndlovu who need financial support in order to continue their tertiary education.
